The Clocks That Changed the World: LED Clocks

When we ask people how technology has changed their lives, they usually speak about cars, TV, and the internet. None of them ever speak of clocks.

According to one historian and philosopher, Lewis Mumford, none of the above changed the world. It was the invention of mechanical clocks. In his 1934 thesis, he laid down a fascinating argument. He proposed that the clock and not the steam engine is the precursor of the industrial revolution.

We can agree or disagree with Mr Mumford. However, the fact remains that the improvements in timekeeping have been front and centre in society’s progress. The invention of mechanical clocks has allowed sailors to estimate longitude and latitude, which propel the discovery of lands and colonialism.

Today, mechanical clocks have turned digital, like outdoor LED clocks, for example. Their applications are limitless. Technology has now reached a point where even the smallest discrepancies can make a huge difference. Let us take a look at LED clocks and how they changed the way we look at clocks.

Precision

Even the most precise mechanical clock cannot surpass the precision of LED digital wall clocks. It does not lose about 15 seconds a day as a grandfather clock does. Although the most precise clocks are atomic clocks, LED clocks have more features than their analog counterparts.

Waterproof outdoor digital clocks in schools, for instance, provide superior readability during time-sensitive situations. It is precise because it doesn't need guessing on where exactly the minute or second hand is located. That quality is particularly handy when you need to tell the time up to the last second.

Construction

Although many analog clocks have withstood the test of time, digital clocks are also well-built. It typically runs on electricity or battery and comes in 12-hour or 24-hour formats. You can switch most of them in between the two modes. The face is an LED screen that is visible even from a distance.

Display

Being able to tell the times at a glance is a godsend, especially for the millennials. They are constantly under pressure on work or school deadlines and need to ensure that they are on time. LED-wall clocks offer clear visibility in brightly coloured numbers. Some models even bring a weather readout to let the people know the temperature and humidity at a glance.

Setting the Outdoor LED Clock

People find it difficult to set the time in some designs of digital clocks. Fortunately, the designers have heard the complaints and modified them. The default after the clock is powered on is at 0:00 or 12:00.

Hertz Electronics
Today, most digital clocks don’t need resetting after the power cut off as they are now incorporated with battery backup for it to run even during power outages. Some even have radio time signals to capture the existing time from a computer connection or satellite TV. In general, commercial outdoor LED clocks are more reliable than consumer clocks.

Conclusion

The history of clocks tells us that each new advancement in technology. It can fire other revolutions. It might be the outdoor LED clocks of today. But we can see more innovations coming up for time telling machines in the future. And for that only time will tell.
